Choosing the right tools +
Recent discussions about making loose incense raise two separate questions: how to prepare a blend, and what is safe to burn. Resins such as frankincense, myrrh and copal can be compared with premixed resin incense; a non-food mortar can be used for compatible preparation. Burning resin typically requires a suitable charcoal burner and a fire-safe heat source, which is a different setup from a stick or cone holder.
Which products and formats should I compare?
Start by choosing either a ready-made resin blend or an accurately labeled resin. Compare charcoal discs and burners expressly intended for high heat. A mortar and pestle are optional preparation tools and should be kept separate from food preparation. Do not assume all dried ritual botanicals, fragrances, or unknown resins are safe to burn or inhale.
All 17 products in this collection were selected individually from the current American Occultist catalog. Review each listing for dimensions, materials, use instructions and current stock.
Premixed resin or separate ingredients?
A prepared frankincense-and-myrrh blend lets you experience a formulated scent without mixing, while separate frankincense, myrrh or copal products make it easier to compare individual aromas. A craft-only mortar is optional and must be kept away from food preparation. Start with a small amount in a compatible high-heat burner, ventilate the room and review materials before any experimentation. Learn to use charcoal discs for resin before lighting loose blends.
