Buying a mineral specimen in person allows you to see details that photographs may hide: the back, base, weight, unstable matrix, repaired points, surface coatings, and how the color changes under ordinary light. The advantage is useful only when the inspection is careful and respectful.
Ask Before Handling
Some specimens are fragile, sharp, expensive, mounted, or balanced for display. Ask a staff member before lifting anything. Let the seller demonstrate the safest grip and whether the piece should remain on its stand.
Hold the object over a padded counter or low stable surface rather than over a hard floor. Never lift it by a crystal point, matrix edge, label, or decorative base.
Begin With the Whole Specimen
Look at the overall composition before focusing on one attractive termination. Consider:
- balance and display orientation;
- relationship between crystals and matrix;
- dimensions and weight;
- natural versus carved form;
- whether the piece stands securely;
- how much of the specimen is visible from the preferred display angle;
- whether the price reflects the whole object or one highlighted feature.
Inspect Every Side
Examine the front, back, sides, underside, base, and areas hidden by stands or labels. Sellers may position a specimen to show its strongest face, which is normal merchandising. Your task is to understand the complete condition.
Look beneath removable stands for adhesive, putty, chips, saw marks, dye accumulation, or an unstable base.
Use More Than One Light
Store lighting can intensify color and luster. When permitted, compare the specimen under neutral white light and ordinary room light. A small flashlight can reveal inclusions, open fractures, coatings, and internal zoning.
Do not shine powerful ultraviolet light at people, eyes, sensitive materials, or products without permission. Fluorescence is an additional observation, not proof of identity.
Distinguish Natural Features From Damage
Natural specimens commonly show contacts, incomplete terminations, internal fractures, matrix removal, color zoning, and irregular growth. Damage may include a fresh bright break, crushed edge, reattached point, unstable crack, or flaking surface.
Ask whether a feature is:
- a natural contact;
- an extraction break;
- later handling damage;
- an internal fracture;
- a repaired or filled area;
- part of a permanent mount.

Check for Repair, Glue, and Stabilization
Repair is not automatically unacceptable. It should be disclosed and reflected in your decision. Look for:
- a line around a reattached termination;
- glossy adhesive in a fracture;
- color differences across a joint;
- putty beneath a specimen;
- loose pieces stabilized with resin;
- a base attached more permanently than expected.
Ask whether the mount can be removed without damage and whether any loose material is expected.
Evaluate Matrix Stability
Gently observe—not scratch—whether the matrix sheds grains, flakes, needles, or crystals. Some materials are naturally delicate. The concern is whether you can transport, display, and clean the object safely.
Do not tap, flex, blow on, or shake a specimen. Ask staff to demonstrate any concern.
Look for Treatments and Coatings
Color may be natural, dyed, heated, irradiated, coated, filled, stabilized, synthetic, or imitation. Signs that deserve a question include:
- color concentrated in cracks or drill holes;
- a metallic or rainbow surface film;
- uniform vivid color across unlike materials;
- residue on the base or matrix;
- an appearance associated with a named treatment;
- a commercial name that never identifies the underlying material.

Read the Label Before the Story
A useful label may include species, variety, associated minerals, locality, dimensions, treatment, collection number, and prior ownership. Preserve original labels even when the store adds a clearer retail label.
